"The brain is the physical organ responsible for processing information, while the mind encompasses feelings, consciousness, thoughts, emotions, and experiences. The Medical System does not address feelings and emotions. Buried feelings have a purpose."

Find the Purpose in Depression and anxiety

ANXIETY

  • Proximate Cause: Any threat real or perceived.
  • True Cause: past trauma, abuse, or grief. Subconscious fear.
  • Purpose: To tell you there is a threat or danger, real or perceived. The purpose of anxiety is connected to survival and finding an escape route. Real risks and the anxiety invoked are life-saving or protective. (see previous class)
  • Secondary Gain: If I have control, I am safe. I use worry to justify my control issues. If I worry, bad things don’t happen.

  1. Need to control situations to feel safe.
  2. Control issues
  3. Mistrust
  4. Dependence
  5. Control
  6. Perfection
  7. Isolation
  8. Obsession
  9. Competition
  10. Comparing
  11. Compulsion.

  • Temporary Admission (connected to a Vice): I want to be in control to feel safe. I don’t trust. I am dependent. I am untrusting. I am compulsive. I need to be perfect, If I don’t do it myself, people will let me down. People are out to get me. Ultimate Exercise: Untrusting, Controlling, Inferior, Superior, Dependent, Afraid, Shame, Guilt, Vulnerable, Scarcity, or Defective.
  • Goal: I let go of my need for control, I trust in the process, I don't need perfection I want ambition, strength and diligence and I trust myself and the people around me. To be: Equal, Balanced, Diligence, Strong, Value, Courage, Loyal, Connected, Peace, Strong

The Purpose of Depression

  • The purpose of depression is to slow things down. When a person fails to gain status or loses their standing, feels powerless or hopeless, depression is helpful to process and resolve this matter. These uncomfortable feelings lead to depression, which slows down the mind and the body. It is constructive if you look inside. The purpose of being depressed is to help us see things clearly or give us a break from competing. Ruminating will enable you to figure things out by looking inwards. The subconscious secondary gain we receive from depression includes getting attention and/or a break. You can control others by being depressing or dejected. You can isolate and not take responsibility. Believing in the "poor me" feels good temporarily. Evolutionary, it has allowed a passive-aggressive way to deal with authority and anxiety. Remember feeling powerless sucks, and ‘depressing’ is the first step to healing.
  • Depression results from major life stresses, along with alcohol and drug use. What causes life stress or addiction is buried feelings.
  • Being 'depressing' allows us to see things more accurately. By not being falsely optimistic, my eyes are open and I can see again. Otherwise said, pessimism is helpful and constructive if it is accurate and can allow for positive change. Ruminating, even though associated with negative connotations, allows you to play something over to make what you had believed to be a significant, bad, permanent, and pervasive shift to small, okay, temporary and specific in a real way, not being falsely optimistic. When I do this work, I thank the depression for being purposeful, necessary, and healing. When I suppress my emotions with pills or blame, I get stuck, and depression gets destructive.
  • None of this work shames or guilt’s anyone for being in a state of depression, rather we support and allow the person to access the secondary gains and purpose of the depression (described below).
  • Now we can look at the Emotion-Link to depression. We must first agree that depression is not permanent, nor is it a brain disease. If depression is caused by failing, feeling powerless or hopeless, falling from status, failing to gain status, or helping you to see things clearly... and the purpose of being depressed is to ruminate or control to allow us to figure things out... Wow! We can then appreciate depression as purposeful versus bad luck, chance, or genetic—the purpose and effect enabling us to be empowered. You cannot heal or resolve the ‘depressing’ if it is permanent and external. Later we will explain the Temporary Admission and make it Descriptive so we can find the hidden emotions or feelings, along with the goals to get out of the trap.
  • Secondary gain: I get attention and a break when I am depressed. I can control others by being depressing or dejected. I can control it, allowing me to take back my power. I get to isolate myself and not take responsibility. Believing in the “poor me” feels good temporarily. I can see things more accurately, not falsely optimistic. Ruminating is a safe and effective way to resolve painful past experiences.
  • Temporary Admission (connected to a Vice): I am depressing, I feel dejected, I am powerless, I am hopeless, I am anxious, I am passive-aggressive. I am controlling. I have self-doubt. I am ruminating. If only. UE: Afraid, Passive-Aggressive, Victim, Disconnected, Controlling, Unrelenting, Perfection, Competitive, or Guilty.
  • Goal: I have hope, I have control, I confront my fear - to move from the vice to the virtue of Diligence, Temperance, Courage, Balanced, etc.
